Landscapes
Although interiors and the figure are the subjects that most interest me, I go back to landscape when I need to rediscover the physical nature of my materials and to work more with light and space than with the representation of form. They are still concerned with mood, but the impetus is the joy of paint--color, texture, opacity, transparency--and the pleasure of experimenting with technique--both layered and direct brush- and knifework, and drawing on and into the painting with paint sticks. I feel free to try supports with irregular and unusual surface qualities; in fact, many are painted on a handmade paper from India, whose rustic texture, shape and edges inspire me. With landscape I continue to explore the chromatic range of earth colors--the ochres, earth reds, and umbers--with the occasional addition of underpainting in high-chroma violets, blues, and yellows.
